Octopus Energy releases home EV charger. The largest energy supplier in the UK has introduced and launched its own EV (electric vehicle) charger called the Octopus Charge. This is the latest development as of September 3, 2005. The main aim is to provide seamless charging for electric vehicle drivers. This is an unbelievable achievement, particularly for those on Octopus Energy smart tariffs like Intelligent Octopus Go. They offer low-cost charging at 7p per kWh. Now they are saving up to 86% compared to standard public charging rates.

Types of Octopus charges

The Octopus Charge comes in two variants:

  • Untethered: £899 (approx. $1,200), compatible with any EV cable.
  • Tethered: £999 (approx. $1,300), with a 5-meter cable.

Both variants are designed and built by Octopus Energy. The charger integrates directly with their smart tariffs for optimization. It comes with a three-year warranty. Companies install and support their customers to ensure a streamlined experience. The Octopus charger is compatible with other UK energy suppliers via the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) or Plug and Charge mode. This charger will be available to all EV drivers after 2025.

Octopus Energy has launched its own home EV charger; this is the first time. This is made by low-carbon hardware the company has released. At the Energy Tech Summit in UK in September 2023, Octopus Energy also launched the Cosy 6. This was followed by the release of the Cosy Octopus heat pump tariff in June 2024.

Home EV charger access key to EV rollout

According to the company, the cost of charging an EV at home can be 100-1000 pounds, which is cheaper than using a public charging point. The previous data shows that public charging can cost 1500 pounds or more per year, so this is cost-effective. The Department for Transport (DFT) is ensuring that this policy change will help prospective EV charger owners save an average of £1,100 when adding EV charging to their home.
